A dangerous roundabout in Taunton has residents up in arms, demanding urgent safety measures. But here's where it gets controversial: despite growing calls for traffic lights, the council insists there are 'no plans' to install them.
Wickes Roundabout has long been a hot topic among locals, with many arguing that traffic lights are essential to prevent further accidents. And this is the part most people miss: government data reveals this roundabout is among Taunton's most accident-prone locations, with at least three serious casualties reported since 2023.
Long-time resident James Howell echoed this sentiment, telling the County Gazette, "It's crying out for change. I've witnessed countless collisions here over the years. Something needs to be done, whether it's traffic lights or another solution."
The issue came to a head after a recent crash on January 24th, where a man was arrested and another hospitalized. This incident reignited public outcry, with drivers taking to social media to demand action. While some, like Julie Marion, firmly believe traffic lights are the answer, others, like Nick Gouldthorpe, argue the roundabout is too small for lights and suggest slip roads as a better solution. He emphasizes, "What's truly needed is common sense from drivers."
Here's where opinions diverge: Rick King blames driver impatience and lack of lane discipline, advocating for a dash cam law to hold reckless drivers accountable. He states, "People are so impatient they risk damage and injury just to get ahead. It's absurd."
Taunton Town Council leader Councillor Tom Deakin acknowledges the frustration felt by residents. He assures, "As a North Taunton resident myself, I understand the daily challenges. While Somerset Council oversees highways, we stand ready to support the community in exploring alternatives and pushing for practical improvements if that's their wish."
While work on the nearby Obridge Roundabout is scheduled to begin this month as part of Somerset Council's 'vital repairs' scheme, Wickes Roundabout remains unchanged. Councillor Deakin welcomes the Obridge improvements, stating, "It's a positive step for the area. For Taunton to thrive, our roads and public transport must function efficiently."
When pressed about future plans for Wickes Roundabout, a Somerset Council spokesperson reiterated, "There are currently no plans to install traffic lights."
