A chilling warning has been issued: Deadly crashes involving faulty Chinese-made air bags are putting lives at risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has urgently alerted used car buyers, owners, and repair shops about the dangers of substandard replacement air bag inflators, specifically those manufactured in China. These inflators have been linked to multiple fatalities, raising serious concerns about vehicle safety.
So far, the agency has confirmed ten crashes resulting in death or severe injury due to these faulty air bags. The inflators, produced by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co. Ltd. (DTN), are suspected of being illegally imported into the United States.
NHTSA reports that eight drivers have tragically lost their lives in otherwise survivable accidents. In addition, two other drivers sustained severe injuries. These incidents all involved vehicles where the original air bags had been replaced with the DTN inflators after a previous crash.
The DTN air bag inflators have been found to malfunction, violently expelling metal fragments. These fragments have caused horrific injuries, impacting drivers' chests, necks, eyes, and faces.
NHTSA launched an investigation into DTN replacement inflators in October after the initial reports of crashes and deaths. Law enforcement agencies are working to address any illegal activities related to the importation of these inflators. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 of these potentially dangerous inflators are currently in circulation.
While the fatal crashes have occurred in used Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata vehicles, NHTSA cannot definitively say the risk is limited to these specific makes and models. This means the danger could potentially extend to other vehicles as well.
NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison has stated that the agency is actively collaborating with the automotive industry and consumers to address this critical issue. The agency has also issued an alert to auto repair shops, urging them to identify these inflators and immediately report any relevant information to NHTSA.
Here's where it gets controversial: NHTSA has emphasized that DTN itself acknowledges that its inflators are prohibited for sale in the United States. This raises the question of who is responsible for importing and installing these dangerous components, and why they are willing to risk lives.
For consumers, especially those purchasing used vehicles that have been involved in previous crashes where the air bags deployed, a thorough inspection is crucial. Ensure that any replacement air bags are legitimate and meet the original manufacturer's standards.
