Heritage Day 2026: Will your favorite spots be open or closed in Halifax?
As Nova Scotia gears up to celebrate Heritage Day on Monday, February 16, 2026, many of us are wondering what's open and what's not. This provincial holiday, which honors a significant figure in Canadian history, means a day of closures for some services and businesses across the Halifax region. But here's where it gets a bit tricky – a potential storm could also impact these plans!
This year, we're taking a moment to recognize Joseph Willie Comeau, a truly remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on Canadian politics. Hailing from Clare in Digby County, Comeau was a titan, serving as one of the longest-standing politicians in our nation's history. His dedication to advocating for Acadian communities and culture was unwavering. He was first elected in 1907 and continued to serve, being elected a staggering nine times. His public service extended to the Senate, where he was appointed in 1948 and remained until his passing in 1966 at the age of 89. Beyond his political career, Comeau was also an educator, an entrepreneur, a devoted husband, and a proud father of 16 children – a testament to a life lived with immense purpose and passion.
So, what can you expect to be open or closed on Monday?
Grocery Stores: If you're planning a grocery run, you'll find that major chains like Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, Costco, and Walmart will be closed. However, Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth is an exception, keeping its doors open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Alcohol Sales: The NSLC (Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation) stores will be closed. However, agency stores will be operational. You'll also find that some private liquor stores, taprooms, and craft breweries plan to open their doors.
Shopping Malls: Most of the popular shopping destinations, including Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, Sunnyside Mall, Bedford Place Mall, Scotia Square, and Park Lane Mall, will be closed. An exception is the movie theatre at Park Lane Mall, which will be open.
Halifax Public Libraries: All library branches will be closed for the holiday.
Public Transit: Halifax Transit buses and ferries will be running on a holiday schedule. It's always a good idea to check their specific routes and times before you head out.
Waste Collection: There will be no waste collection on Monday. The alternate collection day was Saturday, February 14th.
Recreation Facilities: Many municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed. However, the Emera Oval is scheduled to be open, weather permitting.
And this is the part most people miss... Federal Services!
While Heritage Day is a statutory holiday by provincial law, it doesn't apply to federally regulated industries. This means that many federal services will be available. You can expect Service Canada offices to be open, and Canada Post will operate with regular hours, including mail delivery. This distinction can be a real lifesaver if you have essential federal business to attend to!
A Point for Discussion:
It's interesting to note the difference in holiday observance between provincial and federal services. While many Nova Scotians get a day off, federal employees continue their work. Do you think federal holidays should align more closely with provincial ones, or is the current system more practical? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
